A nano-scale free volume perspective on the glass transition of supercooled water in confinement

چکیده
We employ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to measure the temperature dependent fluctuations in a local free volume of water confined in a variety of mesoporous materials with different pore sizes and morphologies. We demonstrate that this unconventional approach can be used to probe the dynamics and glass transition temperature, Tg, of water in confinement. In the simplest case of water confined in a 13X molecular sieve (d = 7.4Å), the confinement is so severe that it precludes crystallisation altogether, and we measure a Tg = 190 ± 2K. We also show that temperature dependent PALS measurements can be used to probe the glass transition of water molecules confined in matrices with larger pore diameters (SBA-15, KIT-6 and Vycor glass), where the confinement is expected to be less severe.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Glass Transition in Confined Water
A molecular dynamics simulation of SPC/E water confined in a Silica pore is presented. The pore has been constructed to reproduce the average properties of a pore of Vycor glass. Due to the confinement and to the presence of a strong hydrophilic surface, the dynamic behaviour of the liquid appears to be strongly dependent on the hydration level. The approach to the glass transition of confined ...

Amorphous alloys has been taken into consideration because of their unique properties and are nominated as the future engineering materials. In this research, the effect of Ni and milling time on amorphization process and thermal stability of Ti50Cu50-xNix(x=10, 15, 25 at%) alloy system were investigated. MRS BULLETIN • VOLUME 33 • MAY 2008 • www.mrs.org/bulletin Abstract To Turnbull’s study of the kinetic problem of nucleation and growth of crystals, we add the further enquiry into what lies behind the slow nucleation kinetics of glass-formers. Our answer to this question leads to the proposal of conditions in which a pure liquid metal, monatomic and elemental, can be vitrified. Using the case ...
متن کاملStudy of Slow Dynamics in Supercooled Water by Molecular Dynamics and Quasi-Elastic Neutron Scattering
The slow dynamics of supercooled water is studied by modelling the spectrum of test particle fluctuations: intermediate scattering function (ISF). The theoretical models are compared with experimental measurements by quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation results. The dynamics of supercooled water can be decoupled into a product of translational and rotat...
متن کاملConfinement as a tool to probe amorphous order.
We study the effect of confinement on glassy liquids using random first order transition theory as a framework. We show that the characteristic length scale above which confinement effects become negligible is related to the point-to-set length scale introduced to measure the spatial extent of amorphous order in supercooled liquids. By confining below this characteristic size, the system become...
